Sports- period 2

Page history last edited by Malik 15 years ago

Have you sports fans ever wonder what sports originated from todays games? Well, back in the Elizabethan time period, gameball, rounders, and golf where the sports similar to baseball, soccer, and golf, the popular games that we play today.

                              Gameball

Gameball is an ancient game that is very similar to soccer.  Gameball was a very important game that played to represent the Elizabethan gods. The game was played in a batey, a hand made field with one goal on either side of the batey.  The players wore multiple equipment on themselves to protect them from getting kicked and being hit with the ball.  The ball was made from rubber, fiber, and cotton that was woven into sphere like form.  The ball was very hard and players mostly had wounds or bruises on themselves after the game was over.  The Elizabethans mostly invented the rules to the game and the game has obviosouly moved on, but I am sure that the people who started the game would be very happy with how popular the game is and how far it has come to throughout the years.

                                             Rounders

Rounders is an ancient game that is similar to baseball.  There is still some dispute from Americans who think that baseball originated in America even though it started in England.  The Liverpool and Scottish rounders association formed in 1889 to start getting people involved in the game and to start forming teams to play games and also in leagues.  The association has worked hard to spread the game around the world but many people get confused between the two sports.  The game itself now is considered on of the mos popular games in England, and now might be the time for rounders to spread to different countries.

                                             Golf

The ancient game of golf first began in the mid 1600s.  How you played the game was that there was a long stick that was curved at the end and a very small ball.  The object of the game was and still is to play 18 hol;es and try to get the ball in the hole with the least amount of times hitting the ball.  In the late 1600s, members at clubs decided thtat they would hold a tournament for all of England.  That tournament later became The Open Championship that is held every year on a different course in England.  The tournament is the third major of the PGA tour and very well might be the best major at that.
